I am a huge proponent of local music. I’m a big enough supporter in fact that I write for a locally based music mag. But even having said all this, my recent obsession with Local Natives’ EP Gorilla Manor has nothing to do with the fact that they’re from L.A. If anything, I was a little skeptical about this group of instrument-toting, harmony-driven, plaid-draped hipster kids (because let’s be honest, there are as many bands/artists spilling out of Silverlake as there are coffee shops). After a failed attempt to see them at their sold-out show at the Echo (there were droves of kids pining for tickets outside), I had to see what all the fuss was about. And I have to admit, I was more than pleasantly surprised. Gorilla Manor is an enjoyable listen—from their perfectly pitched harmonies to their strategically orchestrated instrumentation, these kids got it right.
You can tell that they aren’t messing around and are rightfully earning their street cred. This album has been receiving a lot of hype worldwide, even being named as the “album to watch” for 2010. Impressive. Take a listen via KCRW’s free listening party and see for yourself.

Sitting in the front of the office has it perks, one of them being receiving all the packages and deliveries, and if I’m lucky, like today, some of these bubble-wrapped boxes will contain CDs from record labels or PR companies. Today’s shipment? Massive Attack’s long-awaited EP HELIGO LAND. I’ve listened to this particular track on repeat for the past 3 hours. What can I say, I love me some legendary trip-hop masters.

If this track is any indication of what the rest of Yeasayer’s upcoming album is like, I’m in. And no, it’s not just because I dig the asian influenced beats in the back.

Sometimes, you just want to chill. Chad Bundick aka Toro y Moi eases the stress off with his dreampop/chillwave/whatchamacalit tracks, setting the perfect mood for that crucial meditative part of your day. Spare yourself a few minutes to unplug and unwind.
Note: Look out for this kid. The music prophets are saying he’s going to be a big one in 2010.

It’s our favorite time of the year. The official bill has been announced and has so graciously rewarded Indio fest followers with one of the most epic lineups we’ve seen in a good while. “Majah” headliners including Jay-Z, Muse, Gorillaz, Thom Yorke, and Phoenix take top spots, but should not overshadow soon-to-be-faves the xx, Florence + the Machine, Little Dragon, and Mayer Hawthorne. Also, it’d be a crime not to bring our dance pants for David Guetta, 2manyDJs, Benny Benassi, and Deadmau5. Needless to say, arrangements are being made as we speak. The countdown begins.
See you (cool) kids in the desert for the ultimate hipster bake and shake.

There are a few sure-fire tricks I have to make me fall asleep when I find it troubling to do so. Among the options of nyquil and reading in bed is a playlist so aptly named “sleep” (which used to be named “sleep/study”, both used to fall asleep…and to study. Ironic?). On this playlist? Bon Iver, Sigur Ros, Cinematic Orchestra, Sia…and my most recent addition, Little Dragon. There is so much good to be said about this newfound neo-soul/electronic group from Sweden. I imagine that if Air and Bjork had “lovechildren”, it would sound (and look) a little something like Little Dragon, with their soothing female vocals and gentle beats in the background.
Long story short, this track “Twice” is my most recent lullaby. Enjoy and sweet dreams.

My short review on the solo project and show of the incredible and indecipherable Strokes front man.
